How to Maximize Small Space

When organizing a small space, every inch is important. In my guest bathroom, there isnt a sink vanity, just a small pedestal sink. So our makeover needed to optimize additional storage while making the room seem bigger. The shower takes up more than half the room. Our solutions? We added two matching stylish, organization solutions from Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart.

Maximizing space is so important when dealing with a small space like a bathroom. Storage blocks and shelving units are going to be your best friend when organizing a bathroom. Make sure the dimensions are just right. Adding a piece that is too big may make your small space feel even more cramped.

In addition, working in a small space means your eye has nowhere to go. Creating cohesion in your design choices is important to tie the style together. It also makes the space flow, and it feels less cluttered. Thats why we chose two shelving items from the same collection from Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart. They go together beautifully and add an extra element of organization.

Top 5 Space Saving Hacks

  1. Keep things simple. In order to maximize the space to the fullest, simplify your decor. If you dont absolutely love it, it doesnt belong in the space. Decluttering will also allow you to see what you actually have. Donate what you dont need.
  2. Make use of wall space. When decorating a small space, the walls are your best friend. Hang shelves and wall decor so as to not take up floor space. As a result, the room will feel larger and more functional.
  3. Hooks. Use over-the-door hooks to hang extra bath towels. Mount wall brackets and hooks. Again, the walls are a great space-saving resource.
  4. Utilize every inch.If you are organizing a bathroom, make use of under the sink storage or over the toilet storage. If you run out of space under the sink for toiletries like shampoo and body wash, invest in a hanging shower caddy to hang on the shower head. This is a great place to store all your shower essentials right where you need them. Save space under the sink for things like toilet paper and cleaning supplies.
  5. Invest in clear containers/jars.Using clear apothecary jars to store miscellaneous items is essential when organizing a small space. This motivates you to keep things tidy and in order. Plus, they make storage look extra chic and modern. Mine from Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart are as stylish as they are useful. Extra bonus: they are acrylic so if they drop onto the marble floor nothing breaks.

Small Space Storage Ideas

To start, we ordered these awesome, metal and rustic wood open shelving units to go above and next to the toilet. This is a great place to store miscellaneous bathroom items that you need on hand. We like to create the perfect harmony of function and stylish decor.

For one shelf, we ordered stylish acrylic containers from Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart to hold things like cotton swabs, cotton squares and miscellaneous items. The rack above the toilet even has a useful towel rack to hang hand towels. How perfect! We added lavender scented candles, a diffuser and delicate faux flowers to enhance the spa-like effect.

Since the space is so small, we want to make sure everything has a designated place and there is no excess clutter to distract or overwhelm. To avoid unwanted clutter, place toilet paper rolls in a stackable container next to the toilet, and purchase a toilet brush equipped with a holder. When everything is tucked away like this, it makes the space feel so much cleaner and spacious.

Easy DIY Feature Wall

To liven up the room, Jodie had the genius idea to create a DIY feature wall. We knew we were limited with what we could use in the bathroom. Wallpaper was out because this room gets steamy. So we decided to paint a simple pattern instead. Now, instead of a boring bathroom, the room feels stylish and finished.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

Below, find our step-by-step tutorial for how to achieve this or a similar look.

  1. Gather your materials. Before beginning, make sure you have all required materials on hand. You will need a medium-sized thin paint brush, your choice of paint color (we used black) and practice paper.
  2. Practice brush strokes. Grab a few sheets of scratch paper and begin making single brush strokes in horizontal rows. Decide how thick you want your strokes to appear on the wall by testing out a few different widths on your scratch paper. Get a feel for your brush. This is important.
  3. Next, practice spacing. Space the lines a few inches away from each other. Your second row should stagger the placement. In other words, for a more balanced, natural effect place your strokes in diamond patterns. Repeat this pattern for all rows.
  4. Prep your wall space. Before beginning to paint on the wall itself, ensure your wall is clean of any debris, dirt, and dust. Remove all picture frames or wall decor. We recommend wiping down the surface with a wet cloth or towel. Make sure your wall is completely dry before painting.
  5. Begin painting. Now that youve practiced and prepped the wall, its time to start painting. Repeat the practice instructions, only on a bigger surface. Remember, you want the strokes to look relatively organic and natural. Perfection is not the goal here. It is art, after all.
  6. Try to stay level. Its important to keep a straight vertical line. So step back after every row and make sure you are still level and not heading down or up. If your row isnt perfectly level dont worry. Fix the direction by gently easing your next row back to level. Again, its not about perfection.
  7. Let dry overnight. Before adding any decor make sure paint is completely dry.

How to Decorate Small Space: Stylish Bathroom Accessories

  1. Apothecary Jars. Not only are apothecary jars super functional, but they are chic and modern. They create a minimalistic, clean look that makes for a beautiful bathroom.
  2. Open Shelving. With open shelving, its important to keep things tidy and simple. It also allows you to display stylish accents and decor items. The clean lines further emphasize our desired modern look.
  3. Luxurious White Towels. To create a spa-like effect, choose luxurious white towels and bath mats to brighten the room. Folding towels neatly on the open shelves makes the space feel like a bathroom retreat. It also allows you to always keep fresh towels close at hand.
  4. Soothing Scents. Place calming lavender and vanilla candles on the shelving units. You can choose to use candles or reed diffusers, or both. Its up to you.
  5. Plants. Add an organic touch to the room with a real or faux plant or two. I prefer faux, especially in a room with no sunlight. This creates the same effect as real plants, but without the upkeep.
  6. Gold Accents. A touch of gold adds a bit of glam to the space. We chose a stylish gold framed circular mirror, from Better Homes & Gardens of course, to offset the straight black lines on the wall. The contrast of geometric patterns adds dimension and interest to the room.
