Steal This Look: A Cheerful Kitchen in Echo Park

It’s been years since we first covered the Echo Park Airbnb of two of LA’s buzziest creatives—fashion designer Beatrice Valenzuela and her partner, wood and metal artist Ramsey Condor—but we haven’t forgotten its charm. With summer about to take a bow, we thought it would be a good time to revisit its sunny and colorful kitchen, the kind that can brighten the dreariest of mornings.

The kitchen is small but highly practical. All the essentials are stored out in the open, on open ash wood shelving designed by Ramsey. The built-ins are all custom, but luckily, most everything else is shoppable.

Let’s take a tour. Then scroll down to steal the look.
Above: The palette in the kitchen—a mix of warm yellows and bright ocean blues—is bold but not overwhelming. Above: The couple chose brass and bronze fittings throughout the room for a warm glow. The countertop is fabricated from ash wood, sealed with linseed oil. Above: Ramsey designs a line of hand-made hardware, and his products, while utilitarian, are one-of-a-kind and function almost like jewelry. Above: Walls were kept simple and white. Above: Ramsey designed and built the wall-mounted breakfast table himself.Steal This Look Above: Beatrice grew up in Mexico City and has a fondness for Talavera pottery. This Zigzag Tibor Ginger Jar, by family-run Talavera Vazquez, is $185 at Emilia Ceramics. The hand-painted Puebla Pitcher (at right) from Pottery Barn is affordably priced at $49. Above: The East Square Bar Faucet in the aged brass finish is $1,023 (pictured is the satin brass finish). (For more similar faucets, see 10 Easy Pieces: Modern Single-Lever U-Shaped Kitchen Faucets.) Above: Heather Taylor Home stocks a variety of colorful tea towels, including a number in yellow. Both the Milos Hand Towel in Goldenrod and the Country Plaid Tea Towel in Sand (right) are $24 each. Above: The Traditional Moroccan Cement Tiles are from Badia Design in North Hollywood. Above: Both the bronze Shelf Brackets and the brass Medium Hooks are designed by Ramsey and available via his online store; $240 and $36, respectively. (For our story on Ramsey Condor’s products, see Bronze Age: Everyday Household Objects Reimagined by an LA Artisan.) Above: The couple worked with color consultant Teresa Grow from Madison and Grow, to help them choose the Dunn Edwards exterior semigloss DEA Pirate’s Gold for the door. Above: The General Store carries a slew of ’70s-vibe California pottery. The Painted Bud Vase by Michelle Blade ($95) and the Small Ceramic Bowls by Kyomi Koide ($38 each) would be right at home in this kitchen. Above: Ramsey built the fold-down table himself, but this Wall-Mounted Drop-Leaf Dining Table by Furniture.Agency is an affordable alternative to custom; $65.41 at Hayneedle. Above: When there’s no closed storage in a kitchen it’s critical that everything, no matter how utilitarian, is attractive. These Wing Handbrooms by Custodian Studio are like works of art; $80 each. Above: Shaw’s Original 3018 Fireclay Apron Front Sink from Rohl is $1,432 at AJ Madison. Above: The brass 4.5-inch Sconce by Ramsey Condor is $200.
